Mr. Naveed Qamar, Finance Minister has presented budget for 2008-2009. Its summary is as:

- Rs. 24.30 billion for education sector.

- Rs. 66 billion for power sector.

- Rs. 543 billion for Public Sector development programs (PSDP).

- Rs. 28.4 billion for peoples work… program.

- Rs. 75 billion for dams and irrigation.

- Rs. 37 billion for constructing roads and highways.

- Rs. 296 billion for defence.

- Rs. 27 billion has been allocated to Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) in the PSDP.

- 20% increase in Government employees’ salaries.

- Rs. 75 billion for improvements in population resources.

- Rs. 34 billion for Benazir Support Programe which will be increased upto Rs. 50 billion.

- Rs. 1.1 billion for fish sector.

- Minimum salary has been increased from Rs. 4600 to Rs. 6000.

- Pension amount has also been increased from Rs. 300 to Rs. 2000.

- Sales tax rate is increased from 15% to 16%.

- Minimum limit for taxable salary will be Rs. 180,000.

- Contractual based employees ranging from Grade 1-15 are being regularized.

- Number of Judges of Supreme Court have been increased from 16-29.

- Duty is removed on life saver medicines.

- Rs. 1000 will be given to the deserving families each month. Selection of such families will be made through NADRA data base.

- Import duty is increased from 90% to 10% on importing luxury vehicles.

- Import duty is imposed on luxury items from 30% to 35%.

- Custom duty is removed on energy savers.

- National Identity Cards will be provided to people without any cost.

- Import duty is decreased from 10% to 5% on the import chemicals which is widely used in making medicines.

- Zone of Export Promotion will be established in Balochistan.

- Utility Stores will be increased up to 6000 to give more relief to the poor people.

- Profit on national saving schemes has been increased up to 2%.

- 10% duty is being removed to improve rice production.

- 10% duty is removed on importing rice seed.
