The US President Obama announced new strategy for Afghanistan to deploy
hundreds of civilian officials and extra troops in addition to 17,000 troops.
Obama said in his speech, “I want the American people to understand that we have a clear and focused goal to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat Al-Qaeda in Pakistan and Afghanistan and to prevent their return to either country in the future. The terrorists who oppose us, my message is the same, we will defeat you.” Obama has said that Pak-Afghan border has become safe heaven for the extremists who can not be defeated by bullets and bombs alone.
US lawmakers welcomed the new policy of crushing terrorists while many officials at Pentagon have clearly mentioned that there is no military solution to the war in Afghanistan. Obama further said, “Attacks against our troops, our NATO allies, and the Afghan government have risen steadily. Most painfully, 2008 was the deadliest year of the war for American forces.” He also suggested to establish a “contact group” which will include Iran, China, India and Russia to tackle insurgency.
Taliban spokesman warned the US President against his policy to send more troops in Afghanistan and said “Obama is repeating the same mistake of the last leader of Russia Mikhail Gorbachev. If more troops were going to win the war, Russian would have won the war.”
