(PTI): The shirt worn by Brazilian legend Pele in the 1970 World Cup Final has been sold for a world record £157,750 at an auction in London.

Pele’s famous number 10 jersey was bought by a determined anonymous collector via the telephone in a fierce competition at Christie’s London auction house on Wednesday.

“This has broken the world record for a shirt by a long way and we are delighted,” said Christie’s spokesman Rik Pike.

“Pele is a globally recognized name, universally recognized as the greatest footballer of the 20th century, and this shows the developing strength of the football memorabilia market,” he added.

The yellow and green short-sleeved shirt was estimated to fetch between £30,000 and £50,000 in the sale.

It was put up for sale by Italian international Roberto Rosato, who swapped shirts with Pele after the final whistle.

The Brazilian legend had scored the first goal in a triumphant 4-1 game in front of 107,000 spectators at the Azteca stadium in Mexico City.

The previous record was for England’s Sir Geoff Hurst’s shirt worn in the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany. It was sold for £91,750.
