(PTI): Giant carmaker Toyota is to recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States over a problem in their removable floor mats.

The company said the cars face the risk of a loose floor mat that could cause accelerators to get stuck and lead to a crash. The US government has received dozens of reports of accidents with Toyota vehicles with the problem of loose floor mats.

The Japanese carmaker said the recall would include hot-selling models such as Toyota Camry and Toyota Prius.

Toyota spokesman Irv Miller has strongly recommended that car owners remove the floor mat on the driver’s side until the company permanently fixes the problem.

“A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and could make it difficult to stop a vehicle, potentially resulting in a crash, serious injury or death,” Miller said.

“This is an urgent matter,” said US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Toyota previously recalled about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 in the US to fix a steering problem.
